Description

Main research question/goal
The main aim of this project is to develop up-to-date measurement and evaluation protocols for odour and odour nuisance in Flemish intensive farming. We build knowledge and actualize procedures for odour sampling, measurement and evaluation of odour nuisance in light of the evolutions in animal husbandry since 2002. The procedures developed are then validated via odour measurements in practice farms. This knowledge leads to a better understanding of odour phenomena in animal husbandry and of the dose-response relationship (odour/odour nuisance).

Research approach
ILVO builds an odour lab according to the European standard for olfactometry (EN 13725) and forms an odour panel according to EN 13725. We develop and validate a sampling protocol and a protocol for olfactometric measurements during odour measurement campaigns in real pig farms. Subsequently, we study the effect of various management practices and animal housing systems on odour emissions. Based on literature, we establish protocols for outdoor sniffing measurements and surveys to investigate the odour (nuisance) awareness of the farm’s neighbours. The knowledge acquired is integrated to optimize the methods for performing a field assessment of the situation to better understand the relation between odour and odour nuisance.

Relevance/Valorisation
This research delivers knowledge about the important topic in Flanders of odour and odour nuisance in intensive animal farming. This knowledge can reliably predict the impact of a future farm and/or farm expansions on the surrounding environment. This knowledge forms the basis for more extensive policy-supportive research. This project initiates the actualization of the odour emission values and the evaluation of potential odour emission reduction techniques. The knowledge building aspect of this research project leads to the formation of an objective assessment framework, which in turn prevents the “not in my backyard” (NIMBY) syndrome from occurring.
