Main research question/goal
How can we measure ammonia emission from a cattle barn more precisely? Can we improve existing measures on the Ammonia Management Plan (“PAS” in Dutch) list? Are there promising new techniques which could be considered adding to the PAS list?

These three research questions are related to the policy of the Nitrogen Management Plan. The European Member States are legally required to reduce ammonia losses to the environment, which can result in acidification and eutrophication. In Flanders, these problems are being addressed by PAS. The aim of the “PASgeRUND”  project is to fill the knowledge gaps that are still present around this theme in cattle and to translate them immediately into policy recommendations.

Research approach
PASgeRUND starts with the development of emission measuring techniques at barn and floor level. At barn level, ammonia emission is determined as a function of the outgoing air flow and the concentration of ammonia in this air. Simplified measuring techniques will be validated in the ILVO dairy barn and applied at Hooibeekhoeve and other pilot farms. The measuring technique on floor level will measure parameters which can characterize the ammonia potential of urine puddles in practice.

Individual farmers applying for a permit need access to (building) techniques that can reduce ammonia emission. This project is designed to look for useful and effective measures. By combining measurements at floor level with the Flanders and Dutch ammonia emission model, the effect of factors such as floor systems, manure robots and spraying systems can be evaluated more precisely. The measuring technique on barn level will also be used to optimize existing PAS measures like manure robots and scrapers and spraying the slats with water. New reduction techniques of feed and barn management manure management and barn ventilation will be tested and developed.
