Main research question/goal
This project is part of the long-term strategy for the Flemish fishing fleet. This strategy has been developed by the ILVO Fisheries Technology research group  and should lead to sustainable fisheries. The goal is the development of fishing methods and introduction of fishing vessel types that meet the criteria for sustainable fisheries. This project is based on the technical competences within the Fisheries and Aquatic Production research domain , i.e. a strong seagoing team with extensive expertise in field trials and modern equipment. The focus is on developing fishing gear with less use of material and less hydrodynamic resistance, less fuel consumption, reduced environmental impact and reduced discards.


 

Research approach
Each subproject starts with an idea that is being discussed with fishermen. In a next step, this idea is being translated into a scale model of the fishing gear. This model is subsequently tested for observation in a flume tank. After the necessary technical adjustments, full size gear is built and observed on a research vessel. When the design is satisfactory, the new gear is tested in commercial conditions, in close cooperation with the fisherman. Finally, through demonstration and communication, new designs are being introduced in commercial fishery. Good communication about these introductions is part and parcel of the projects, aiming at a better public image of the sector.


 

Relevance/Valorisation
The Flemish fishing industry is facing increasingly stringent demands from society concerning fuel consumption, discards and seafloor disturbance. There is a need for better fishing gear. The consumption of fuel and materials must be reduced, as well as the environmental impact of fishing gear. This is important to save on costs. On the other hand, this is necessary because fishmongers increasingly buy sustainable seafood. Fishermen who do not meet the requirements will lose their position on the market. Finally, all this should lead to a sustainable fishery that can provide our society with an infinite source of food.
