Main research question/goal

The aim of this project is to develop a system/web platform for awareness, early detection and notification of quarantine organisms harmful to plants. These include insects, fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes that are not (yet) present in Belgium. The aim is to make this web platform accessible to all citizens, including professionals in agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

Research approach

A web platform will be developed based on an analysis of existing warning systems from home and abroad. This system will be integrated into the existing reporting platforms For each quarantine organism, clear information sheets are made in both national languages to be put on the platform. In order to make the existence of the platform known, courses for professionals are organised and online teaching material is made available.

Finally, we aim for a well-developed, user-friendly and widely known web platform for awareness-raising, rapid detection and reporting of the 'most wanted' quarantine organisms that currently pose a major threat to important crops and public green spaces in Belgium. This system will be made available to the government, professionals and individuals by the end of the project.
