All - text and , letting .9AbstractAgriculturalsoilsinnorthwestEuropeaswellas10inpartsoftheUSAhaveexcessivePlevels.Tomeet11Europeanenvironmentalstandardsonnutrientleachingin12soilswithahighPload,thetotalPcontentofmanuresand13compostslimitstheirapplicationrate.Theaimofthe14presentstudywastodeterminetheeffectoffeedstock15compositiononC/PratioandPavailabilityinmature16compost.AfunctionalcompostwithahighC/Pratioanda17highorganicmattercontentisavaluabletoolformain-18tainingsoilfertility.WeproducedcompostswithC/Pratios19of60–180andhighorganicmattercontents,i.e.,43–72%20ondrymatterbasis.Pconcentrationinthecompost21increasedandC/Pratiodecreasedduetomassreduction22duringthecompostingprocess,whichwasdeterminedby23thebiochemicalcomposition,i.e.,thebiodegradation24potentialofthefeedstockmixture.Thefeedstockselection25alsohadindirecteffectsonPavailabilityduetoitseffect26oncompostcharacteristicssuchaspH,whichstrongly27reducedthereadilyavailablePconcentrationsat28pHH2O[8.5.CompostpHwasfoundtobeanimportant29indicatorforreadilyavailablePconcentrationsinthe30studiedcompostswithpHH2Obetween7.1and9.4,andwas31positivelyrelatedtototalCacontentinthecompost,32indicatinganinteractionbetweenCaandP.Incontrast,P33availabilitywasnotrelatedtotheorganicmattercontentof34thecomposts.Mixingbiochar(pyrolyzedorganicmatter)35intothecompostfurtherreducedthereadilyavailablePin36twotypesofcompostby10–64%,evenafteradditionofa37smallamountofadditionalmineralP.Thiswasobserved38fortwotypesofbiocharwithdifferentchemicalcompo-39sition.Thereductionwashigherforthebiocharwiththe40highestCa,FeandAlconcentrations,indicatingtheroleof41theseelementsforPbindinginthebiochar-blended42compost.
